Journalist and Comms

Jen is a journalist at a well-respected, independently owned local paper in Perth, Australia. She worked at the paper in the late 1990s/early 2000s, then pressed pause on her career to focus on family. In 2023, she slipped back behind the news desk so easily it was as if she’d never left.

She covers a wide range of topics and style under extreme deadline pressure. She has had weekly columns on various topics, including the popular Robin Harts column of the early 2000s, and recently, a wine lovers’ column.

She has won national and state media awards for her stories, and been a finalist many times.

Jen ran her own copywriting business for more than a decade. She has been a communications manager for a national research foundation, and has been a media consultant for various organisations.

About being a ‘journo’

‘Journalism is almost a calling. There are many who have worked as journalists who don’t really get the ‘why’ of it, and those people always end up in PR or in Communications (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

It is a privilege and a joy to hear people’s stories and opinions and layer them together to make a story that sings.

There is always pressure, deadlines, limited space and limited time.

One learns to use language efficiently and to think of the reader when choosing every word. ‘
